Sankat Mochan Hanuman Mandir

Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple :

Sankat Mochan Hanuman Mandir is located on tranquil banks of Assi River in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. The temple was established in early 16th century by great poet saint Sri Goswami Tulsidas. "Sankat Mochan" meaning the "reliver from troubles". This temple is near the Banaras Hindu University. Today, Prof. Vishwambhar Nath Mishra is current mahant of the temple.

History Behind:

It is believed by many scholars that famous Hindu preacher and poet saint Sri Goswami Tulsidas during his journey to Kashi (Varanasi), used to pour water on a dried tree after bathing in the Ganga. One day, while performing this ritual, a spirit (yaksha, in some beliefs) appeared from the tree in front of him. He said, "Would you like to meet Ram Ji? I can make it happen." Tulsidas became very happy after hearing this. The spirit then revealed that before meeting Ram Ji, he would have to meet his unfluctuating devotee, Bajrangbali Ji. The spirit guided Tulsidas that near the Ram Ji temple by the Ganga ghat, there would be a person sitting suffering from leper, who was indeed Bajrangbali Ji.

Following the spirit's instructions, when Tulsidas reached the leper, he moved forward. Tulsidas started following the leper. On reaching to thick forest, Tulsidas grabbed the leper's feet and said, "I know you are Hanuman Ji. Please reveal yourself to me." The area known as Asaikshi(earlier known as Aanad Kanan Van) is where thick forests existed, and it was there that Bajrangbali Ji eventually revealed himself to Tulsidas. On Tulsidas's request, Hanuman Ji then took the form of soil and established himself in that area. Tulsidas had the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Mandir built in Varanasi.

Tulsidas was a great devotee of Hanuman Ji. Once, Tulsidas was experiencing pain in his arm. So, he started complaining " You destroy everyone's trouble, but you won't relieve my pain". After this, while being upset he wrote the Hanuman Bahuk. Miraculously his arm pain disappers only after writing Hanuman Bahuk.
