Baba Chamliyal:

The Shrine of Baba Chamliyal is situated in the Ramgarh sector of Samba District on the International Border of India-Pakistan. Despite being a tense area, Baba Chamliyal Mela brings not only the people together but the forces also.

There is no literacy source available that can describe the life history of Baba Chamliyal. The story of the life of Baba Chamliyal Ji has been maintained through oral tradition. According to locals of Chamliyal village of Samba district, the story of Baba Chamliyal is as follows:

There was a saintly person who lived in Chamliyal village whose name was Baba Dalip Singh Manhas. He later became popular with the name of Baba Chamliyal. He always talked about universal brotherhood and worked for the welfare of society and needy ones. He used to treat people suffering from skin diseases. He became very popular because of his good deeds and was highly respected by the people of Chamliyal village. However, some anti-social people were not happy with his popularity and wanted to kill him.

 

They called Baba Chamliyal Ji at Saidawali village(present in Pakistan) by using false help. Baba was riding a horse to Saidawali village. A little way out of the village, some people attacked him and cut his throat. His head fell in Saidawali village and a horse carried Baba's headless body to Chamliyal village. There, Baba's body and Baba's horse sank into the ground. The people decided to keep his philosophy and practices alive by constructing a memorial. Today, there are two shrines present in his name. One is present in Chamliyal village where the body of Baba Chamliyal sank and another one is in Saidawali village where Baba's head fell.

 

Miracles of Baba Chamliyal:

There are several stories associated with the miracles of Baba. One of the famous stories is that one of the followers of Baba was suffering from a skin disease, which could not be cured with the usual medical treatment. He lost all his hopes. One day Baba appeared in his dream and told him to apply holy soil (Shakker) and water(Sharbat) on his body for a few days. He followed the same and after a few days, he was completely cured of the disease.

 

Another story is of a camel. One day an injured camel reached the spot and fell there. He was suffering from great blood loss and was about to die. His condition was very miserable. To quench his thirst, he used to eat wet soil on the premises of Baba Chamliyal. After a few days, he was cured and then reached his master's place.

Baba Chamliyal Mela 2024:

Every year, a huge Mela is organized by the district administration of Samba district. Baba Chamliyal Mela is held on the last Thursday of every June. Devotees when coming to Baba Chamliyal Shrine, take a parikarma and touch the chadar of Baba. The color of Baba's chadar is green. Lakhs of devotees come to seek blessings from Baba Chamliyal Ji from across the country. Some come to pray for the well-being of their children, some(wrestlers) come to pray for their physical strength, and some come to cure their skin disease. Devotees from Pakistan present Chadar for the shrine and receive Shakker and Sharbat from Baba Chamliyal Ji. Now, due to tension on the International Border, all these rituals are performed by the Forces of India and Pakistan.

By Air: The nearest airport to the shrine is Jammu Civil Enclave, Jammu. After that, one can book a taxi or cab to Jammu Bus Stand, then take an Electric Bus to Ramgarh. After that, book an auto or e-rickshaw to Chamliyal.

By Train: The nearest railway station is Vijaypur railway station. From the railway station, the destination is 23km away, one can opt for a cab taxi, or local transportation.
